On 22 August 2026, Galtür will once again serve as the starting point for one of the region’s most time-honoured hiking events. The Silvretta Ferwall Marsch offers four routes through the mountain landscape between the Silvretta and Verwall ranges – ranging from family-friendly walks to marathon distances.

When the first walkers set off from the village square in Galtür early in the morning, a day begins that has been an integral part of the region for more than 50 years. The Silvretta Ferwall Marsch brings together people who want to experience the alpine landscape around Galtür on foot – whether for sport, for pleasure or with the family. Rather than focusing on record times and the pressure of competition, it is the personal experience along the way that counts: the first climb, the view across the mountains, a break at a refreshment station, and the moment when the finish line draws nearer. In this way, the event combines a sporting challenge with a love of nature and a sense of community every year.

Four routes through the mountains of Galtür

At 42.5 kilometres and 2,006 metres of elevation gain, the marathon route is the longest and leads via Wirl, the Zeinisjoch, the Verbella Alpe, the Heilbronner Hütte, the Grieskogeljoch, the Friedrichshafener Hütte and the Larein Alpe back to Galtür. The Ferwall route covers 30.4 kilometres and 1,589 metres of elevation gain, whilst the Silvretta route covers 19.7 kilometres and 767 metres of elevation gain. For families, there is a 15-kilometre route with 467 metres of elevation gain (including the ascent via the Alpkogelbahn). It leads, amongst other places, via Wirl, the Alpkogelbahn, the Kopsstausee dam and the Zeinisjoch back to Galtür, and is also suitable for pushchairs.

Hiking at your own pace

The race starts at Galtür village square: for the Marathon, Ferwall and Silvretta routes, participants can start between 6 am and 9 am; for the Family route, between 9 am and 11 am. The finish line remains open until 5.30 pm.

Depending on the route chosen, participants will receive a performance badge: gold with a certificate of honour for the marathon route, gold for the Ferwall route, silver for the Silvretta route and bronze for the family route.

Catering and supporting programme

Along the routes, there are several refreshment stops offering regional specialities to keep you going. Refreshment stops are located at the Zeinisjoch, at the Alpkogelbahn mountain station, on the Breitspitze, at the Heilbronner Hütte, at the Grieskogeljoch, at the Friedrichshafener Hütte, in Außertschafein and on the Larein Alpe.

There’s also something on for children: during a treasure hunt, they’ll collect letters along the way, which can be exchanged for a treasure at the finish line. From 1 pm, there’ll be live music at the Galtür Sports and Culture Centre, and from 2 pm, childcare with face painting. At 6 pm, there’ll be the prize-giving ceremony, the group rankings and a tribute to the oldest participants.

Registration

Entry is available from 30 euros per person. Anyone who registers by 14 August 2026 will receive a personalised race number. The starter pack includes, amongst other things, refreshment stations, photo points, a functional T-shirt, achievement badges and certificates, gifts for children, a children’s programme and entry into the prize draw.

The Silvretta Ferwall Walk will therefore once again take place in 2026, offering a day that combines exercise, the mountains and a sense of community.
