On 26 September 2026, the 32nd International Alpine Cheese Olympics will bring the diversity of Alpine cheese culture to Galtür. More than 100 alpine dairy farms from Austria, Germany, Italy, Switzerland and Liechtenstein will present their artisanal specialities at the Sports and Culture Centre and submit them to the judgement of an expert jury. Visitors can sample the cheeses, buy them directly from the producers and learn more about traditional work on the alpine pastures.

To mark the end of the alpine summer, Galtür will once again take centre stage for exceptional Alpine cheeses. On Saturday 26 September 2026, dairy farmers, experts and connoisseurs will gather at the Galtür Sports and Culture Centre. From 11.00 am, visitors can look forward to a culinary journey through five Alpine countries – from mild, creamy varieties to spicy ones and on to full-flavoured, long-matured specialities.

The origin shapes the distinctive flavour of every cheese. Herbs, grasses and flowers from the high-altitude pastures influence the milk and lend it its characteristic flavours. Likewise, the knowledge, experience and meticulous craftsmanship of the dairymen shape every single product.

The Games for the Golden Alpine Harp

A panel of expert judges assesses the cheeses entered against specified quality criteria. Awards are presented to the most impressive products in the categories of hard cheese, sliced cheese, soft cheese and sour milk cheese, as well as cheeses containing spices or herbs. As a mark of outstanding quality, the best producers receive the coveted Sennerharfen awards in gold, silver and bronze.

The younger generation also demonstrates their discerning palates at the International Alpine Cheese Olympics: a children’s panel of judges tastes selected specialities in a blind tasting and decides on their favourite independently of the experts. The winner is awarded the ‘Dreikäsehoch Prize’.

The awards recognise not only the end product, but also the craftsmanship and personal dedication that go into cheese-making in the alpine pastures. At the same time, the competition provides a forum for professional exchange and helps to pass on traditional knowledge about the art of cheese-making.

A selection of Alpine cheeses to try

At the stalls run by the participating alpine dairy farms, visitors can sample the different varieties, discover their personal favourites and buy the products directly. Chatting with the producers also offers an authentic insight into everyday life on the alpine pastures, the cheese-making process and the distinctive features of each region of origin.

As well as cheese tasting and interesting facts about life on the alpine pasture, guests can look forward to a festive procession and a varied programme of events featuring musical entertainment. Admission costs 18 euros per person. The International Alpine Cheese Olympics is organised by the Galtür Rural Youth Association.

Anyone wishing to discover the diverse flavours of the Alps, sample high-quality products directly from the producers and learn about authentic cheese-making will find a special destination in Galtür. The International Alpine Cheese Olympics offers a first-hand experience of the quality, provenance and craftsmanship of Alpine cheese-making.
