Museums in and around Ischgl

There are three museums in Ischgl – and they all revolve around the region’s history and its particularities.

  • Mathias-Schmid-Museum and Mathias-Schmid-Art-Trail: Mathias Schmid was a famous art personage from the Paznaun. In his works, the painter guides the viewer through the mountains of Tyrol and portrays the everyday life of the farmers there. You can contemplate his paintings, at the Mathias-Schmid-Museum at the outskirts of the village and the forests of Ischgl – a sight to behold from the outside already.
On the occasion of the painter’s 150th birthday on November 14, 1985, the Mathias-Schmid-Art-Trail was opened. On this eleven-kilometres-long trail, display boards tell about the artist’s life and his works. By the way: the circular trail is suitable for prams which makes it perfect for families, too.
  • Farmers’ museum in Mathon: a journey back in time at the Paznaun. What you get to see there didn’t happen all that long ago – but it’s still completely inconceivable from today’s point of view. At the farmers’ museum, on the first floor of the Walserstube inn, you get an insight into the world of the farmers at the Paznaun: from tools for harvesting hay to the weaving chamber and the bed-chamber.
  • Museum of the Silvrettaseilbahn AG cable car company: Attention, cable car fans! At the museum of the Silvretta cable car, a paradise for tech aficionados awaits. Experience a journey back in time to the early stages of the cable cars in Ischgl. You also get to see old skis, ski boots and the equipment of mountain rescuers from the days of yore.
