In the tracks of smugglers and adventurers

Smugglers' circuit

For unlimited shopping across the mountain – hiking which is a bit different!

Want to combine shopping with a hike or hiking with shopping?

Well you can on a summer holiday in Ischgl – providing that you have your rucksack with you and there is enough room for booty. After all, Samnaun in Switzerland, which provides an opportunity for some duty-free shopping, is just 10km as the crow flies from the town of Ischgl. It was exactly this short distance that the smugglers of yore made use of.

Incidentally, the forefathers of people who live in Paznaun got to Samnaun via these smugglers’ paths.

Follow in their footsteps today across the border to Switzerland on the one-day hiking trails. To save a bit of time, you can take the Silvretta and Flimjochbahn from Ischgl town direct to Flimjoch. From here there is a fantastic panorama view to the surrounding mountains in the Samnaun, Silvretta and Verwall group areas.

Smugglers Tour on interactive map

Anyone who takes part in a guided smuggler’s tour, will enjoy a 2-hour hike into Switzerland and will also get to hear audacious stories about the customs officers and the smugglers.

Duty free shopping

Samnaun is the only area in Switzerland which has a duty-free agreement, which means you can enjoy duty-free shopping. Among others are exclusive branded perfumes, luxury watches, fine jewellery, tobacco goods, designer fashion and much more.

However, customs regulations have to be adhered to:
More information on this is available in the valley at the Tourist Association in Ischgl. The brochure ‘What can I take with me?’ provides an overview of all the key regulations for purchasing without having to pay customs duties.

Are your rucksacks and pockets full?
Before you attempt to haul it all back, after shopping hop on to the cable cars and chairlifts and get back to Ischgl again in comfort.
