Ischgl Ironbike – The Mountain Bike Event of the Year
Each summer, the mountain bike elite meets in Ischgl to participate in one of the best MTB races in the world: the Ischgl Ironbike has evolved into a true classic among the mountain bike marathons.
With a total of EUR 20,000 in prize monies disbursed each year, the Ischgl Ironbike is the highest paying mountain bike race in Europe today. The next race is slated to take place on August 2, 2008. The international top stars of the bike marathon scene will go neck to neck with amateurs to battle over the victory right here in Ischgl. The entire weekend that frames the Ischgl Ironbike will quickly turn into a fabulous bike party. The bikers have a choice of three routes:
- Short round:
27.5 kilometres long, it challenges bikers to master 755 metres of altitude difference. The race begins in Ischgl. The track leads across the Lareinalm to Galtür and back to Ischgl. This round, which is not too difficult, also comprises single trails, but should be manageable for bikers who have some training. - Medium round:
with a total length of 48 kilometres and 2,057 metres of altitude difference this is a route designated for bikers who have some ambition in terms of physical fitness. The difficulty level is average-difficult. After a small round, bikers have to master a steep incline up to the Idalpe and to the Vellilscharte. The subsequent super trail was designed by biker legend Hans Rey. The high speed downhill slope takes riders through the Vellil Valley back to Ischgl. - Long round:
the Ironbike marathon route totals 79 kilometres and is a challenge even for professional and highly trained sports bikers. The 3,820 metres of altitude difference make this a tough one. The long round is highly taxing over long sections of the route – technically as well as in terms of physical fitness. After the small round is completed, the route divides at the Idalpe. The marathon track leads across the Greitspitz and Saalaser Trail, then down to Laret and Samnaun. The return path to Ischgl takes the bikers across the Zeblas Yoke, the Palin Head and the Höllboden.
The clever tour planning the Ischgl Ironbike has implemented allows bikers to decide on the route of their choice while they are already en route. You still have plenty of energy left after the small round? Then go ahead and try the medium round. This is still not wearing you out completely? Then you take the crossroads to the long round of the bike marathon at the Idalpe.
