A CONTEST FOR 20,000 EURO PRIZE MONEY:
VICE WORLD CHAMPION MIRKO CELESTINO WINS THE 16TH ISCHGL IRONBIKE
The contest for fame, glory and 20,000 Euro prize money is over! Vice world champion Mirko Celestino from Italy won the hardest mountain bike race of the year - the 16th Ischgl Ironbike - with a time of 3 hours, 58 minutes and 52 seconds leaving Karl Platt from Germany (4:04:08) and world champion Alban Lakata of Austria (04.15.36) in second and third places. Sally Bigham from Great Britain won the ladies' challenge with a time of 5 hours, 14 minutes and 45 seconds. Second and third places went to Katrin Schwing (5:39:51) and Brigit Söllner (5:40:52).
The 16th Ischgl Ironbike, the mountain bike challenge with the highest prize money in Europe, enjoyed record participation in 2010: on August 14th 900 sports enthusiasts competed for 20,000 Euros prize money. Three trails of different lengths posed a challenge for all participants and tremendous excitement for the spectators.
The classic Ironbike route of 79 kilometres with 3,820 metres altitude difference demanded skill and stamina even from mountain biking experts. The long ascent to Greitspitze mountain, a breathtaking downhill-single-trail to the Samnaun valley in Switzerland followed by an ascent to Palinkopf mountain guaranteed an exciting and diverse route. Biking in Ischgl: the challenge is not called Ischgl Ironbike for nothing!
There were two trails for hobby mountain bikers and leisure cyclists - but there was as much suspense and excitement on the middle trail. The ascent to the Idalpe Alpine pasture was long and exhausting and the further ascent to Vellilscharte mountain demanded peak performances from even well trained mountain bikers. The descent into Velliltal was a well-earned reward. The trail designed by mountain bike legend Hans Rey left no biking dreams unfulfilled.
Details of the middle trail: 48 kilometres, 2,050 metres difference in altitude.
The 'short trail' over 27 kilometres and a difference in altitude of 700 metres was easily feasible for hobby mountain bikers. Many competitors enjoyed an exciting sporting challenge during their biking holidays in Ischgl and in 2011 that could be you.
There were many attractions besides the mountain bike trails. Trial world-champion and red Bull athlete Tom Öhler demonstrated what is possible on two wheels during his trial show. The highlight of the mountain bike events in Tyrol was a fantastic award ceremony.
